Choosing a Finish

OIL BASE
Tung Oil or Oil modified finishes produce a subdued or semi-gloss appearance. Tung Oil is a drying oil, which is extracted from the seeds of a tree. When applied, it is absorbed slightly into the surface of the timber and allows the natural shrinkage and expansion to occur without highlighting the gaps between the boards. Oil finishes can be re-coated to restore their appearance, or maintained with acrylic polishes. The expected domestic wear factor is one to three years depending on the usage. This type of finish is susceptible to yellowing with age.

SOLVENT POLYURETHANE
Modern Polyurethane finishes (single or two pack finish) provide a smooth hard and glossy surface. Semi-gloss finish is available. Polyurethane provides the hardest surface available and can be re-coated after light sanding. The expected domestic wear factor is five to ten years depending on the usage.
All timber finishes yellow and the degree is varied by the amount of light directed to the floor and the natural resin, which is the base of these finishes.

WATER BASED FINISHES
Water Based or Acrylic Polyurethane is friendly to the consumer with quick drying and less smell. They are inclined to reduce the natural features and colour of the timber. This coating is slightly dearer and refurbishment and re-coating takes one day. Expected domestic wear factor is three to five years depending on usage.
